Belgrade, June 19th 2012.
Dear Madam/ Sir,
National Organization of Persons with Disabilities of Serbia (NOOIS) is umbrella organization of 13 Serbia’s national disability organizations, representing more than half a million of citizens of Serbia with disabilities.
NOOIS would like to hereby express to the Honorable Nobel Prize Committee of the Norwegian Parliament its’ adherence and support to Lenin Moreno Garces’, Constitutional Vice-President of the Republic of Ecuador, nomination for 2012 Nobel Peace Prize.
Bestowing 2012 Nobel Peace Prize to Mr. Lenin Moreno Garces would be recognition of his and Republic of Ecuador’s contribution to furthering the cause of persons with disabilities. This kind of recognition would be long overdue and much in order as persons with disabilities constitute 15 percent of world population; according to World Health Organization and World Bank 2011 World Disability Report, over one billion persons with various types of disability live on planet Earth today and they constitute one of the most numerous marginalized groups in society. Persons with disabilities often are the invisible citizens. Majority of persons with disabilities live in developing countries in conditions of extreme poverty. Ecuador had been one of the dedicated champions in the United Nations who put considerable efforts into drafting and adoption of Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the 1st human rights treaty to be adopted under the UN auspices in the new Millennium. Mr. Lenin Moreno Garces, a person with disability himself, was one of the individuals spearheading struggle for promoting and protecting human rights of persons with disabilities. He richly deserves 2012 Nobel Peace Prize and we support his nomination.
